I created RevealWild to allow people to view their location on a map and text their coordinates (latitude and longitude) to their friends and loved ones. I'd heard of and read too many stories about people who were lost or injured, were able to connect by cell phone, but were not able to tell or show people exactly where they were. RevealWild is another tool that you can use in these situations. It's also designed to be fun, and to be used for casual transmissions of your location to friends.
RevealWild uses the location sensors on your smartphone to give you the most precise location possible, commonly within a few to several meters (the app includes Android's FusedLocationAPI, which uses GPS, WiFi, and other means to derive an accurate location).
The location is specified with a Marker on a Google Map, and displayed in a text field: latitude, longitude, elevation in feet and meters, and bearing, in degrees. (The latter two pieces of data, when available.)
You can configure in the Preferences up to five text numbers for broadcasting your location. When you click the Send icon (then, and only then), a text message is broadcast to your recipients (let's say, your Mom, Dad, girlfriend, best friend). The message looks like this:
Bruce PerryCoordinates: 50.0918,-122.8844Elevation in feet (meters): 7,242 feet (2208)URL: https://www.google.com/maps/@50.0918,-122.8844,13z
If you click the URL in the text message, you'll be brought to an app such as Google Maps, where you can interact with the location on a terrain map, for instance.
RevealWild is not designed for tablets yet, because these devices commonly do not send text messages without a workaround. This app is designed for the so-called "normal" sized smartphone screen. However, if these tablet features change and there's a demand for RevealWild on tablets, then I will design a version for them.
RevealWild is not designed to substitute for emergency rescue devices like satellite phones or beacons, nor does it only have to be used in "dire straits." A friend of mine recently used it to show his friend his location in a city park, because they weren't finding each other!
RevealWild is dependent on a cell-phone connection. It has been tested in both cities and fairly far into the wilderness in both the United States and Western Europe. I recently used it at 7,500 feet above sea level in British Columbia, Canada, near Whistler Peak.
RevealWild has been localized for German and Spanish, so far. Have fun!
